I make no secret of my preference for Sangiovese as my favorite red wine grape. Sangiovese makes some of Italy's greatest wines hailing from the magnificent region of Tuscany, but it is also grown in other DOC areas like Abruzzi which is just south-east of Tuscany. Memo is made by the young oenologist Mario Ercolino who is targeting the younger market of Sangiovese drinkers, but even an old fart like me can love this wine. This medium bodied wine has ripe, spiced cherry fruit, soft tannins and good acidity and is very balanced and ready to drink. Try it with meats and cheeses, most any red-sauced pasta dishes or simply by itself. --Bud Saylor--
